Michter's Distillery has gone through a few name changes, originally known as Shenk's, and later Bomberger's. In 1753 it was John Shenk who founded the distillery in Schaefferston Pennsylvania. Through the Mid-1800's Abraham Bomberger took over and in eventually landed with Lou Forman who combined his sons names Michael and Peter to form Michter's distillery.

The brand almost didn't survive. In 1989 it was closed due to bankruptcy but saved by Joseph Magliocco and Richard Newman who relocated to the heart of American whiskey country, Kentucky.
