Bourbon whiskey is a type of American whiskey that is barrel aged in charred oak barrels and consists mainly of corn (70%+ corn + 15% rye + 15% barley). This is referred to as traditional bourbon. There are 2 other categories of bourbon: wheat and rye bourbon. In these variations a higher proportion of that grain is used in the mash.

From these 3 basic types of bourbons, further sub-categories exist which include: Small batch bourbon, single barrel bourbon, unfiltered bourbon, and blended bourbon.
