Royal Lochnagar 36 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml/ 57.6%)
First launched in late 2015 as part of Diageo's single cask range, this super old Lochnagar formed a trifecta of superlative whiskies composed from some of the “rarest” and “most valuable” in Scotland. The other whiskies included a Cragganmore 43 Year Old and a Port Ellen 33 Year Old. The latter were exclusively available via travel retail markets, however a small number of Lochnagar bottles made it to retail.
Outturn of 174 world wide.
At 36 years of age, this weighs in at a natural strength of 57.6% Alc./Vol. and comes presented in a beautifully detailed bottle housed in a stunning blue lacquer presentation box.
Says Peter Fairbrother, global marketing director of Diageo Global Travel and Middle East, “These Single Malts are some of the rarest, most distinctive and most valuable whiskies in the world. The exclusivity of these whiskies cannot be overstated as only a few hundred bottles of each exist. Each of these exclusive Single Malts has a distinguished heritage and a compelling story and presents a unique opportunity for collectors and whisky lovers to own a piece of Scotch whisky history.”
Completely renewed in 1967, Royal Lochnagar today preserves its traditional, iconic character with an approach to whisky manufacture that is thoroughly hands-on and artisanal. Fermentation times are long and slow, ensuring that every last morsel of character is extracted from the mash, while short, stubby stills maximise the broad flavour spectrum. The bulk of the output is aged in ex-Sherry butts. The result is one of the fruitiest, richest Single Malts on the market. Historically, most of the production was used in the famous VAT 69 blend. Today the majority is bottled as single malt.
